John Baird, Jr. House
420 Grove Avenue, Petersburg, Virginia
Circa 1783
John Baird, Jr., a Scottish merchant and early developer in Petersburg, built this property. The upper levels originally served as his residence, with a counting house and lodging rooms in the stone cellar. The Hall Parlor, raised basement house is rare to Virginia architecture in that its gable end faces the street.
3 story stone and wood siding building, 2 floors used as office spaces, interior 2,709 square feet, 3 HVAC units, 3rd story 1,176 square feet ready for finishing, 3,885 total square feet, 4-6 parking spaces, multi use potential. close to the river and downtown.
At the turn of the last century, the building was used as a fish market. From 1908 to the mid 1970's it served as a church. In 1978 the property was sold and then used as a blacksmith's shop. The Historic Petersburg Foundation, Inc. purchased the property in 1988. For years, Grove Avenue has been a primary focus of the Foundation's preservation efforts, as most of what remains from Petersburg's earliest construction is located here, on the oldest street in Petersburg. Since June 1999, the John Baird, Jr. House has served as the Foundation's headquarters.
The time has come for us to restore another property and continue revitalization efforts in another part of the city.
